I am on temporary leave from 14th of January 2019 onwards. You may reach me at elina.pekkarinen@oikeus.fi.
ABOUT ME
I am a researcher in the fields of childhood and youth studies. I originally qualified as a social worker, and served in child welfare and emergency services in the city of Helsinki. However, I was drawn to research and science. Thus I completed my doctoral studies in the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Social Sciences in 2010 and have a title of Docent in the same university. My special fields of interest involve child and youth welfare, child protection, youth crime, and the issues of marginalization. Recently I have also become familiar with the attitudes and opinions of young people through editing the annual Youth Barometer.
I have worked in the Finnish Youth Research Network since 2010, first as a network coordinator in a project on Knowledge and Research in Child Welfare, and later as a researcher. From 2013 to 2016 I worked in a personal postdoctoral research project funded by the Academy of Finland, in which I focused on the questions of marginalization and youth in the context of child welfare. The research data consisted of case based document data on child welfare removals, and of interviews with young adults that have lived in state owned reform schools. The aim of my research is to form a theoretical model that visualizes not only the structural, but also the experience based levels of marginalization. My prior research projects have considered marginalization, social problems, and deviance, but also other issues in social work, such as management and expertise. I am also interested in the philosophical bases of science, and particularly in the writings on critical realism. Since the autumn of 2016 I have worked as a senior researcher, and since 2017 as a research manager in the Finnish Youth Research Network.
In Finnish Youth Research Network I am a member of the executive group, responsible for the administrative duties together with the research director, a secretary of the Ethics Committee of Youth and Childhood Studies, and an editor in chief of the Finnish Youth Barometer together with Sami Myllyniemi. I am the vice president of the board of the Finnish Society for Childhood Studies, member of the executive board in State’s Reform Schools and Prisons’ Family Unit, vice member of the National Council for Crime Prevention, vice president in National multidisciplinary expert group in child welfare research, member of the board of the Children of the Station Foundation, member in Childhood research -group in Advisory Board for Finnish Ombudsman for Children, member of the board of the magazine on criminal justice "Haaste" by the Ministry of Justice, and an expert member on child welfare issues in the Administrative Court of Helsinki. I am a member of the European Inter-Disciplinary, Socio-legal Care Decision-Making -network and Restrictive measures in institutional care for children and young people – a Nordic comparative perspective -network, and a coordinator of the Critical Realism and Social Work Research -network, which is part of the European Social Work Research Association (ESWRA). I actively work as a reviewer for both national and international scientific journals, and help to organize seminars and conferences. I am an active writer, editor, and speaker. During my spare time I go outdoors, read novels, train my two pointing gundogs, and used to play saxophone in a band called The Studets.
