From father to son - cross-generational defence will in Finland after second world war (2014-2016)

Finland has conscription based military service which is compulsory to men and open for volunteer women. This research project raises up the question how meanings of defence will and views on conscription military service has changed in different generations. In this project the themes of cross-generational national defence and the will to defend are approached with multi-sided qualitative data (interviews, online data, autobiographies) by which the effect on historical time, place and social and political changes are taken into consideration.

The project is led by adjunct professor Mikko Salasuo. Tiia Laukkanen works as a full time researcher. The project is funded by the Maanpuolustuksen tieteellinen neuvottelukunta (MATINE), puolustusministeriön tutkimusosasto, Eevi ja Eemil Tannisen säätiö and Maanpuolustuksen kannatussäätiö.
