Sinikka Aapola-Kari appointed Research Director of the Finnish Youth Research Network

The Board of the Finnish Youth Research Society convened on 4 December and appointed Docent Sinikka Aapola-Kari as Research Director of the Finnish Youth Research Network. Aapola-Kari has been serving as the Acting Research Director since the beginning of 2017 during the recruitment process. Before this, Aapola-Kari was a Senior Researcher in the Youth in time – A qualitative Longitudinal Study project, which she also coordinated.

Aapola-Kari is a respected researcher in the field of youth studies and has carried out ground-breaking work in girl studies and the history of youth studies. Her main areas of research concern age and life paths, youth peer relationships, education, pedagogy and gender. Aapola-Kari has long and versatile experience in research, teaching and administrative duties, including at the Department of Sociology at the University of Helsinki and the University Network for Youth Research YUNET. She has strong networks in both the Finnish and international field of youth studies, which provide her with a clear understanding of the role of youth studies in the Finnish and the international fields of research.

“The appointment of Research Director is of great importance to the Finnish Youth Research Network, and it influences the entire field of youth research beyond our organisation. Aapola-Kari is a highly distinguished, recognised and influential youth researcher and I am very proud to have her as a director,” says Antti Häkkinen, Chair of the Finnish Youth Research Society.

“It is an honour to lead such an energetic and versatile community of researchers as the Finnish Youth Research Network, especially now as my tenure coincides with the beginning of the Finnish Youth Research Society’s 30th anniversary year. Research and science operate in an ever-changing environment but I am optimistic about the future of Finnish youth research,” says newly appointed Research Director Sinikka Aapola-Kari.

The process to recruit a new Research Director was launched at the beginning of 2017 and lasted the entire year. Aapola-Kari succeeds Leena Suurpää, who held the post from 2010 to 2016 and became the director of the Emergency Youth Shelter of the Finnish Red Cross.
